Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Recovery-amendment

The American Psychiatric profession believe that "once an alcoholic who, always an alcoholic who. Even a Add ICT drug addiction, always a Add drugs ICT. Alcoholism/Add drug iction is a disease and ' Relapse ' is part of the recovery. "

"Not true" says, Dorothy m. Neddermeyer, PhD, holistic Healer. "By using a holistic approach-body, mind and spirit--people can be healed of alcoholism and Add drugs iction without relapse and without cravings by healing underlying causes as the precipitation of the use of alcohol or drugs to cope with. A holistic approach incorporates life coaching, massage therapy, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, yoga, physical fitness, spiritual awakening and Chinese herbology. "

' When Add an ICT Add always a ICT and Relapse is a part of recovery ' paradigm has paralysed many people to a life of struggle and self-deprecation in the whole world. "You are not an alcoholic who Add or ICT. You are not kobsaftalens sick. You have just chosen a substance to handle the underlying conditions that you can heal, at what time your dependence will cease completely and forever. "

Today has healed hundreds of people named--alcoholics and Add drugs ICT, I speak with complete safety to alcoholism Add and ictions are diseases. not

If not a disease, what are they? The answer is that they are labels used to describe the States where you find yourself after you have used alcohol Add or ictive drugs in large quantities or a long enough period to have developed a dependency on them, which means that a Add icted person can not permanently suspend your application without help.

Alcohol and drugs are not problems; they are what people use to numb internal pain, in order to help themselves cope. These questions have both physical and mental components--everything else from anemia, blood sugar or a sluggish thyroid attention deficient disorder, brain-wave pattern imbalances or deep emotional pain-Depression-, fear, panic, OCD, anger, sadness fear.,

There are seven steps to recovery, Add which ress these causes, but foundational to them all is this important premise: when the underlying painful questions is discovered and healed, the need for alcohol or drugs disappears.

The seven Recovery steps include: recognize, Re-Look, Feel, Re-Re-Experience, respond, release and renew.

This process will open your mind to new ways of thinking, which will cause you see your dependency and perhaps the entire life, in a whole new light. It will help you to understand that all dependency is a symptom, not a problem. To see your dependency in this new light will enable you to heal even faster and more efficiently than ever before--and permanently.

A hypnoterapeut Sygejournalen, Hypnotherapy to cure

A little over ten years ago I was between jobs. I had been working in Psychiatric Hospitals and other Institutions, as an Admissions Counselor, Chemical Dependency Counselor, Case manager and Discharge Planner. I was attending some college courses, hoping eventually to obtain a Psychology degree, when a friend of mine suggested, "Why don't you study hypnotism, you could help people stop smoking and make some money." It seemed like a good idea, so I ended up attending classes at the world renowned Gil Boyne Hypnotism Training Institute, in Glendale.

As soon as I saw on the first video what Mr. Boyne was able to achieve with hypnosis I exclaimed to him, "You are getting people to give you information in a few minutes that would take six months to a year in therapy, because consciously they don't know these things!" I knew I had encountered something I had always wanted, a means to make my work as a counselor more effective and economical in terms of both time and money. As yet I was not aware of the possible depth, speed and range of change available through hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

I have since discovered that hypnotherapy can be divided into two aspects. 1). "Putting in the good stuff," or suggestion therapy. To most people this is the most familiar, planting suggestions in a clients mind of a beneficial nature, such as, "You will act on the powerful desire you discover today to stop smoking for good." etc., while a person is in a hypnotic trance. The other aspect could be described as, 2). "Taking out the bad stuff," by altering and/or releasing historical causations of difficulties. This trance-pires by entering the subconscious mind, the other seven eighths of our mind we have little awareness of, and relieving difficulties in hypnotic trance. Of course, both aspects may well be implemented concurrently, (at least by me), with any client.

The effectiveness can be astonishing. One client returned after the first session and stated. "I stopped drinking coffee, watching soap operas, and have emerged from a low grade depression of many years duration." As a bonus, this man had a thyroid condition called "Bright's Disease," which caused his eyes to be permanently popped out, so he looked angry or scared all the time. It was now only barely visible around one eye. In addition, three quarters of the anxiety, regarding supervisory duties at work, which initiated his visit, had vanished. Though hypnotherapy is not always so dramatically effective as this, I inform prospective clients that eighty percent of those I work with usually see major positive changes within four sessions. I have seen the client's blood pressure go down from regular use of one of my self-hypnosis tapes. Persons have obtained rapid healing with little pain from invasive medical procedures and surgeries. Young persons, (around fourteen to twenty one years,) if willing, can often gain astonishing progress, due to being so open, and mentally fluid.

My process produces all kinds of general positive change, then I also work on the specifics. I help a person gain access to inner resources and increased self-esteem, while removing blocks that are keeping them stuck, so they can resume personal growth without me. Naturally, the amount of time and work necessary to obtain relief from any difficulty is related to it's prior nature, duration, intensity and severity, and the available inner and outer resources.

What kind of problems is hypnotherapy useful for? Traditionally it has been successful, with habit control, smoking, weight, bedwetting, nail biting, stuttering, and so forth. Also to increase self confidence, motivation, memory, concentration, creativity, productivity and self esteem. For reducing anxiety, releasing fears, phobias, headaches and nightmares. Sexual problems of both sexes may be amenable to hypnotic methods. The rapid release of grief is often very easy to facilitate, and unresolved grief from past losses is a significant contributor to more difficulties than is generally known. I have found that even the death of a beloved animal can leave a person in a state of frozen mourning. I use Hypnosis as an adjunct to treating drug and alcohol problems.. I receive referrals from Psychiatrists, Doctors, Psychotherapists, Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Alternative/ Complementary Medicine practitioners, to assist clients who may be stuck in some way, or have a problem, such as mental and physical tension, that the referring party does not treat.

Correction of many obstinate physical/mental/emotional situations can be initiated. In fact, the holistic hypnotherapeutic process is as unlimited as the boundless Shaman's Imagination of the practitioner, and to the extent that he can utilize his Wizard Words to conjure up Magical Image Processes that heal, as becomes a Charm-ing Mage. Hypnosis then works in the I of the mind, as an Alchemical Philosopher's Stone, trance-muting the unknown into the golden healing known. Now I will close with the words of Tiny Tim, from a Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, "God bless us all, each and every one."

Releasing Past Grief.

One of the most useful aspects of hypnosis is that in trance, a person's emotional defenses are softened or lowered. This allows for the release of previously submerged and trapped emotions. A heightened awareness of thoughts and feelings also trance-pires. This combination allows the possibility of resolution of difficulties following the rapid location of their deeper source.

This is especially relevant for the release of blocked or frozen grief. A significant number of my clients suffer from this as a major component of their difficulties. It contributes to poor concentration, irritability, feeling "down", physical and psychosomatic problems, and accentuates any other problem a person might have. This may be despite a person's belief that they mourned the loss. Over many years with many clients, when probed in a relaxed trance state, only two had no residual pain regarding a major loss. For most, rapidly obtaining complete relief is a relatively simple matter. After the release, remarks such as, "I never knew that was there.. still bothering me so much," etc. are made. One female, having dinner with a friend after a session, was told, "The look of pain that was always in your eyes has gone." This was after the release of grief entangled with guilt, as is often the case, subsequent to an abortion.

Grief is not restricted to the death of a loved one or family member. Miscarriages as well as abortions. The loss of a beloved pet animal can be agonizing, especially for those who have fewer deep connections to other human animals. The end of a long-term relationship is often like a death. As an addictions professional, I am aware that saying goodbye and mourning the loss of the "old friend" that could always be "depended on", whether it be alcohol, cigarettes, or whatever, is a sometimes a necessary step along the road to abstinence.

To close, I will detail these simple easy cases where the release was a mini-miracle, immediate and complete. The first was a lady who had lost a baby due to a miscarriage a year before she came to see me. After assisting her to enter a relaxed state I began, "You mentioned the loss of your baby... " At these words, her head went back, and a wordless howl of agony emerged, on, and on, and on.. finished at last.. no words.. that was it, all of it.

While on vacation, a man's long term pet, his dog, had died. Somebody remarked, "You have to take them on a last walk before they die," and he had become deeply guilt stricken, feeling he had failed his old pal, and had sunk into a deep depression. In trance, I pointed out to him that he had taken the dog for his last walk, before he departed on vacation. The guilt resolved, with further grieving he came to peace, and laid his canine friend to final rest.

A young woman had had an emotional breakdown, after rejecting her partner for being a womanizer, with no interest in changing. She was hardly eating or sleeping, barely living, going to work like a zombie. A psychotherapist would probably term this a reactive depression. Coming out of the first trance, after grief release she said, "I'm hungry!" Returning for the second session she said, "When he calls me on the phone, instead of feeling so desperately awful, I see myself waving goodbye to him as I visualized in trance, and I'm O.K." Aligning her head and heart while releasing the tears of grief was all it took. Because she had no other problems to complicate matters, only one session was needed to initiate her recovery process. Though not always this simple, healing is always a possibility.

Working With Young People.

Hypnotherapy with young persons, from the ages of approximately 13 to 21 years old, can often produce extraordinarily powerful results. One reason is that their minds are so open and flexible, so that the process of change is easily assimilated into their own current growth and development. In addition, their personality and self esteem are still being formed by incorporating the "messages" conveyed by the words and behavior of family, authority figures and peers. Positive suggestions absorbed in trance give them the necessary emotional support and nurturing that they need. Of course, all adolescent problems have a high degree of probability of being associated with substance abuse, if not developing addiction or alcoholism, which is another question. I have helped teenagers emerge from intensifying downward spirals of anxiety, panic and depression, subsequent to having a bad experience with alcohol and/or drugs, some kind of a "bad trip."

The common antecedent to many adolescent problems is parental conflict, especially separation and divorce. Adults usually have little idea how these events devastate a child's sense of security. A rapid drop in academic levels, or sudden negative behavioral changes, (if not the result of alcohol/drug problems, another common cause), frequently indicates a problem at home. Remarriage often brings on or further aggravates difficulties. Much of the time the child is classed as either mad or bad, when in fact they are caught in emotional traps. Because young people are very in touch with their situations and emotions, especially in trance, it is often quite a simple process to assist them obtain relief, if you can gain their trust. Absolute non-judgmental genuine sincerity is a must. Many require no more than four or five sessions, of two hours plus, for virtual elimination of their troubles. Simultaneous initiation of ongoing emotional improvement processes via suggestion therapy adds many more benefits. Realizing that a person's life may be radically improved for fifty or more years is personally very rewarding to me. Also, my own adolescence was so disastrous, agonizing and bereft, that I have a deep compassion and understanding of troubled teenagers, and love to provide them with the assistance I never knew I needed, and of course did not get.

Serious problems such as trichonomania, (compulsively pulling out of hair and eyelashes), obsessive hand washing, night terrors, and so forth, have also yielded to my hypnotic ministrations. I have helped a succession of young males reverse declining grades and other unacceptable behavior problems at school, by resolving resentment regarding a stepfather, especially if the stepfather is "mistreating" a mother the son is very close to. Unfortunately, when a young person gets poor grades, not knowing this is the result of emotional stress, they may conclude, (on their own or with the assistance of authority figures), that they are stupid and then begin to regard themselves as a failure. In fact, I have retroactively dealt with these issues in adults, still carrying scars to their self-esteem from precisely this sequence.

Agoraphobia bath filled with sand

Agoraphobia is a condition that is closely related fear with and panic attack, actually one condition can bring the other one. This condition fear is of open spaces or public spaces or crowded spaces or simply uncomfortable with unfamiliar surroundings. If you know of a good bath filled with sand place then they will be comfortable and feel not worried, but if you have steps outside this comfort zone and go where they do not feel in control it will make them uneasy and they can panic well and not be able to handle the situation.

This is due to irrational thoughts that make fear bath filled with sand humiliation and insecurity as not being in control. This is a condition that could soon take over life's sick, they can only keep routine places, which will work, visiting family or only visits the places they know well and feel safe with, restrict them from a full life. In extreme cases, they turn out to be limited to their own home and not have confidence to even go outside at all. These feelings and fear this is devastating for bath filled with sand, often knowing that they are irrational but has no control over these overwhelming thoughts. They can influence the bath filled with sand so much that they can be exposed to the risk of slipping into a depression, and that would only hinder their fate.

If bath filled with sand goes in a place they don't know, they can begin to feel anxious and this can result in panic an attack. Thought processes of these conditions are very similar, they start with fear or an event, as these fear sparks s and they can easily grow until they are out of control.

It is the thought processes that must be understood and modified and this is something that cannot be fixed my medication alone, at least not long term anyway. Certain prescribed by a doctor medication can alleviate symptoms short term, but repairs not condition the long term. So if these trode processes, fear causing to be changed is the kind of treatment that we must look for a therapy that can get to the root of these thoughts. One such treatment is Cognitive Therapy as discussed in the elements of our reasoning minds and perceptions of the way we think and behave. There are other types of therapy, which can also help to understand why these thoughts into and take over our lives, hypnotherapy such as and insight therapy.

It is an obvious argument that anyone who suffers with Agoraphobia or fear any disorder should seek help through an effective therapy treatment but that the bath filled with sand, it's hard enough to deal with their problem and not an easy thing to search help, it is important then to family and friends to help, if they realise that a person close to them can suffer from this condition. Bath filled with sand even they must Try to seek help through the people closest to them, the people they can trust to help them, to be able to confide in someone they trust could be the first step to healing their mode just have to support and understanding can be a great comfort.

Hypnotherapy today

HYPNOTHERAPY OR CLINICAL HYPNOSIS

Hypnosis has been used as a therapeutic tool for centuries, but only in the past 60 years have the clinical applications been shown. The use of hypnosis by the medical community has increased, partly as a result of a growing awareness of hypnotherapy as an available psychotherapeutic treatment, and also as a result of extensive research.

History of Hypnosis

From the Egyptians who used 'sleep temples' in which therapeutic suggestions were made, back to the histories of ancient Greece and Rome some form of hypnosis has been practised. The clinical applications, however, have not been clarified until recently. Researchers and clinicians have now introduced theories that are both acceptable and supported by scientific evidence.

In 1843, a Scottish surgeon, James Braid, attempted to explain trance in scientific terms. Surgery was performed under what Braid called 'hypnosis' coined from the Greek word hypnos, meaning sleep.

In the early part of the 20th Century hypnosis was used almost exclusively by stage hypnotists, thereby projecting a hopelessly distorted view of this very powerful therapeutic tool. Hypnotherapy is completely different from stage hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is not something that someone 'does' to you. You remain in control. Unfortunately, stage hypnotists who capitalise on the entertainment value of hypnosis have done very little to better people's perception of hypnosis.

In 1955 the British Medical Association endorsed the practice of hypnosis in Medical School education, since then it has become a valuable addition to conventional, medical and other psychotherapeutic treatments.

What is Clinical Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy?

Simply speaking hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. Clinical Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy, therefore, is the use of an altered state of consciousness, or trance, for therapeutic endpoint. This means that people are not treated with hypnosis but are treated in and out of hypnosis.

All hypnotic states are characterised by a tremendously pleasant state of relaxation, which individuals allow themselves to enter so that desired, beneficial suggestions may be given directly to the part of the mind known as the subconscious. Under hypnosis, the subconscious part of the mind which influences mental and physical functions becomes more receptive to therapy. During the trance state there is heightened concentration for the specific purpose of maximising potential, changing limiting beliefs and behaviours and gaining insight and wisdom.

Although hypnosis may be light, medium or deep, a medium trance is usually used during which metabolism, breathing and heartbeat slow and the brain produces alpha waves. Normal states of consciousness i.e. sleeping, dreaming, being awake, can be detected in the wave patterns produced by the brain. The state of hypnosis differs from all three. The brain waves associated with quiet, receptive states are called alpha waves. In alpha states, the body gradually relaxes. Hypnosis, meditation, day dreaming, being absorbed in a book or music or television, driving and arriving at your destination without recalling all the usual landmarks etc. are good examples of alpha states.

The trance state is therefore a natural phenomenon. Clinical Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy practised by a trustworthy and professionally qualified therapist is completely safe.

How does Clinical Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy work ?

The subconscious mind is the source of many of our problems and self images. Our beliefs, habits and behaviours are stored as information. The subconscious is a tremendous reservoir of our unrecognised strengths and knowledge. Essentially, hypnotherapy is used to help an individual change his unhealthy beliefs and thoughts.

Hypnosis is a natural and effective technique for accessing the subconscious mind - the key to unleashing our potential, changing our unwanted habits and behaviours and finding solutions to our problems and concerns.

Any therapeutic intervention implies change, so entering a trance state alone does not signify a therapeutic endpoint. Once the individual has achieved a trance state the hypnotherapist uses many different therapeutic methods ranging from simple suggestions to analytical therapy. For example, the therapist may ask about past, present or future concerns to establish the reasons for the problem. Alternatively the therapist may give suggestions to the subconscious mind aimed at overcoming specific problems such as lack of self confidence. Some uses such as calming a person require minimal change on the part of the individual, more complex behaviour patterns such as overeating or treatment of panic disorders or reactive (non-clinical) depression require a more complex therapeutic intervention together with psychological and behavioural homework.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session?

The initial task of the therapist is to establish rapport with the client. This involves encouraging the client to talk about his or her concerns. The therapist would spend time with the client first to take a clinical history. As well as establishing a clinical record, the discussion contributes to building trust and confidence between the therapist and the client. Feeling safe, comfortable and secure with the therapist helps the induction of a hypnotic trance.

Goals for therapy are discussed and agreed and a full explanation of hypnosis is provided. Any questions or misconceptions about hypnosis would also be dealt with.

There are many different ways of achieving trance state. Usually, you lie in a reclining chair or couch and the therapist talks to you in a slow and soothing voice. You may be asked to imagine or visualise walking down a country lane, or stare at a fixed point or listen to the sound of the therapist's voice. Suggestions for relaxation may also be given. To deepen the trance, the therapist may count you down from 10 to 1 or ask you to imagine walking down a flight of stairs. You will feel very relaxed but still aware of your surroundings.

To return to full consciousness, which you can do all by yourself at any time, the therapist may count up from 1 to 10.

The length of treatments depends on the problem or symptom and the individual's circumstances. With some people a problem like nail biting can be successfully treated in one session. Other problems such as panic attacks can take up to 5 or 6 sessions.

In the course of the therapy clients are usually taught self hypnosis as part of a number of therapeutic homework tasks.

The first session usually lasts one and a half hours with subsequent sessions between an hour and an hour and a half.

- Nobody can ever be hypnotised against their will and even when hypnotised, people still remain in complete control of any suggestions given.

- The whole object of clinical hypnosis is to take back control that has been lost and which has therefore resulted in the symptom or problem.

- It is estimated that approximately 85% of people of all age groups will readily respond to hypnosis.

Which conditions are suitable for treatment by Clinical Hypnosis ?

Listed below are some of the conditions for which clinical hypnosis is indicated as a practical treatment:

- Breaking unwanted habits e.g. smoking, nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting), nail biting, stuttering.

- Hypnosis in sport. This is a very goal orientated form of therapy focusing on positivity and motivation and dealing with performance limiting beliefs and attitudes and strengthening strong and healthy beliefs and establishing constructive self images.

- Obtaining relief and remission from symptoms such as: headaches, migraine, gastrointestinal and neurological disorders.

- Dermatological conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, neuro-dermatitis.

- Gynaecological problems such as PMT, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, psychogenic infertility and in obstetrics.

- Pain control for minor surgery, dentistry, arthritis and general neuromuscular aches and pains.

- Hypnotherapy can free individuals from phobias, compulsions, emotional problems, insomnia, inhibitions, guilt feelings, jealousy and many of the worries and anxieties of everyday life.

- Sexual problems such as impotence, premature ejaculation, frigidity, vaginismus and others.

- The use of self hypnosis will help prevent stress and tensions caused by modern day living, reduce high blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

- Hypnotherapy is effective for weight control, increasing work/study/sporting performance, improving concentration and memory, developing the imagination, boosting self confidence, and achieving more of the potential which we each possess.

Hypnotherapy is completely natural and safe and there are no harmful side effects. When used by a professionally trained and skilled therapist the benefits are long lasting and often permanent.

Which conditions are not suitable for treatment by Clinical Hypnosis ?

Any condition that may be caused by serious underlying disease i.e. where the cause of the symptom is organic or serious psychiatric illness.

Points to consider if you intend seeking help from a hypnotherapist

A good training with supervision is absolutely essential for practising clinical hypnosis or hypnotherapy regardless of whether the therapist is a psychologist, medical practitioner such as a doctor or psychiatrist, social worker or a non medical person.

There are over 70 different organisations in the UK offering training in hypnosis, hypnotherapy or clinical hypnosis. Properly taught, the ability to induce hypnosis is easy to acquire. However, it takes a long time to learn how to use this skill effectively within a therapeutic framework.

Established and recognised training organisations and colleges teach hypnotherapy by presenting and then demonstrating the hypnotherapeutic techniques. Students then practice on each other to gain experience of working with acquiescent and resistant subjects.

There are also organisations that offer training in hypnosis through distance learning. You are strongly advised to look for a therapist who has trained with an organisation that promotes the highest ethical principles and standards of professional practice in hypnotherapy and not through distance learning. Would you be willing to be the passenger in a car whose driver 'qualified' without ever sitting behind the steering wheel ? Ensure that the therapist is fully trained and ask pertinent questions. A professional therapist would be happy to answer any of your questions.

Remember that hypnotherapy is not a magical cure; it is a branch of psychotherapy. It is termed 'brief therapy' which means unlike traditional psychotherapy, it takes much fewer sessions.

Just like any other form of psychotherapy it may not work for everyone.

Anyone who wants to be hypnotised can be. The reverse is also true and you can resist hypnosis.

The mind has an incredible capacity to heal and this power can be unleashed through hypnotherapy. However, it is important to rule out any possible medical causes for the symptoms by first visiting your GP.

Hypnotherapy is completely natural and safe.

Panic attack triggers and root cause Hypnotherapy

Mental disorders such as panic attacks are extremely frequent these days. The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry puts the number of general anxiety disorder cases in the USA alone at over 19 million people! Of this, it's estimated that around 6 million suffer from anxiety and panic attacks.

This statistic is very revealing. But one of the most troubling facts about it is that the vast majority of these cases are treated almost exclusively with pharmacological means. Chemicals. Medications.

So-called "alternative" therapies have only recently began gathering momentum, as it is now becoming patently obvious to the sufferers of this condition that the "orthodox" pharmacological approach simply doesn't work very well in most cases.

What's worse, it's fraught with dangers and side-effects and whatever results are achieved, usually don't last (not without continuing to use these medications!)..

It is now a widely accepted fact that psychotherapy offers the best tools to effectively (and side-effect-free) deal with panic attacks. And among the various tools available to psychotherapy, hypnotherapy - and particularly RCH - is presently broadly acknowledged as the (almost) undisputed champion (though proponents of CBT may disagree: see my other reports for more on this subject).

The "disputes" which still exist come almost invariably from the psychiatric/medical and pharmacological circles (and some from "competing" natural therapies). But the voices that matter most - the patients themselves - once they've tried this method, rarely if ever go back. There's no need, because they get cured very quickly!

It needs to be acknowledged that not all forms of panic attacks yield to hypnotherapy. Usually, these are linked to "clinical depressions." This may be because they indeed have a "physical" background as the majority of psychiatrists maintain, or because these particular individuals are simply extremely resistant to "digging in their subconscious past." For those (minority) sufferers, the orthodox, medicinal route may be the only way to go.

For the rest, there are many different types of alternative and "natural" treatments, and many of them report excellent results. If a particular practitioner of a given method is sufficiently adept at applying it to his or her patients, he or she may even achieve an incredibly high cure rate.

But a method which tends to work the best for most therapists, is hypnosis. This said, there are many different types of hypnotic therapies, so this statement shouldn't be left unqualified.

The methodology which I advocate ("Root Cause Hypnotherapy") is one which works the best, even if it isn't entirely conventional.

At the heart of psychotherapeutic treatments aimed at curing panic attacks lies one deceptively simple assumption: the cause for them can be traced to one or more traumatic experiences in the patient's past. Some of those traumatic experiences may have been obvious to an outsider, others may have been very subtle and convoluted and a logical link may appear tenuous at best or even unlikely.

The psychotherapist's job is not to unravel these logical - or illogical - connections. The job is simply to help the patient discover that root event and then help him or her deal with it - once it's discovered. A psychologist always strives to look for purely "natural" or "psychological" solutions to all the various psychological conditions. This is what most psychologists have in common. But the difference between different treatments really comes down to the manner in which the therapies are conducted.

In case of panic attacks, for instance a psychologist may try to "reason" with the patient or "persuade" him or her or perhaps make "lifestyle recommendations". Or, as in my case, resort to "techniques" such as hypnosis. Some psychologists prefer not to look for those root causes, but rather choose to focus on rebuilding and strengthening their patients' personality structures - a process which, if conducted well, can also lead to excellent results. Other non-psychological approaches include diets, exercise regimens or meditation, and there is a lot to recommend some of these methods, when taken on a case by case basis. It also needs to be pointed out that combination methodologies can also work very well. Recently even some psychiatric treatments started employing elements of hypnotherapy. Most methodologies which do not address the root causes, however, unlike hypnotherapy, have less chance of long-term success.

My personal issue with many of those "alternative treatments" is the highly variant methodology. It seems that for every "healer" there's a different method. This means that while some may indeed be very successful with their techniques, others may be total failures - but the public is still left none the wiser, and no one can reasonably say that, for example, "special diet techniques cure panic attacks." SOME may well do. But which ones? In case of hypnotherapy, this reservation also holds true, but to a much lesser degree. Modern therapeutic methodologies are now quite well established and as long as the practitioner applies them correctly, his or her results are actually quite predictable. Not in all cases, of course.

Recently the number of hypnosis courses has skyrocketed and it may seem like every Tom, Dick and Harry is now a hypnotist.

This amateur hypnosis trend is perhaps the single most troubling development in this otherwise superbly promising field. Thousands of well-meaning amateurs can do much damage to hypnotherapy's reputation. I've frequently heard of patients bitterly complaining how they were mislead or cheated by a "hypnotist". But it needs to be said that these kind of situations are not limited to hypnosis. Charlatans are everywhere. And they're not limited to "alternative" circles. As a university student I remember a popular booklet being circulated, entitled "How To Cheat With Statistics..."

Dr Frank R. Stahl, PhD was educated at Universities in Sweden, Germany and the USA. He is known from his numerous radio & TV appearances in English, German, Swedish, Danish and Spanish and is one of the originators of "Root-Cause Hypnotherapy."
