Detection of depression called for young women with symptoms of the menopause-Like

Friday, December 3 HealthDay News)-young women with a similar to the so-called menopausal status primary ovarian failure should be evaluated for depression, suggests a new study.

Women with the condition, called POI for short, normal amounts of reproductive hormone production stop developing hot flashes, tend to be infertile and also face an increased risk of depression. POI you can develop as soon as adolescents or 20 years, according to researchers, national institutes of health of United States.

The researchers assessed 174 women with POI and found that 67 percent now had depression or at least once in the past had been clinically depressed. The researchers noted that this rate is more than double the rate found among women in general.

The finding was released online before the publication in a forthcoming edition print journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism.

For that reason alone depression seems more common among women with POI, however, remains uncertain. Theory that a POI diagnostic learning is what depression triggered in the majority of women with the condition of was not supported by the study, which found that more than 68 percent of women became depression before that they were diagnosed.

However, what do doctors, was made clear in the study, according to one study, Dr. Lawrence M. Nelson, Chief of integrative and reproductive medicine at United States National Institute of child health and human development senior authors.

"Because of the strong partnership with depression, our results indicate all women diagnosed with POI should be carefully evaluated for depression," Nelson said in a press release from NIH.

"Simply asking patients if they are depressed is not enough", he added. "Primary care physicians should evaluate their patients with a diagnosis test to determine if you need treatment or referral to a specialist mental health to more evaluation."
