Pharmaceuticals or prescriptive medications are called anti-depressants and fall into a few different classes. Each class works in a different way on the chemicals in the brain known to affect mood. The type of medication that is prescribed depends greatly on the type of depression you are suffering with.
Trycyclics are not used as a first choice. The primarily reason is because of the very serious side effects of these drugs. They modify the levels of two neurotransmitters in the brain, Serotonin and Norepinephrine. MAOIs- monomine oxidase Inhibitors are an early class of anti-depressants and are used with patients who do not respond to other treatments. They are also beneficial in the treatment of other mental illnesses. This class of drugs may have an adverse interaction with some foods like wine and cheese.
SSRIs- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors are a newer form of anti-depressant. This class of drug changes the amount of Serotonin in the brain. There are fewer side effects than the Trycyclic class of drugs.
SSNRIs- Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors increase the availability of both Serotonin and Norepinephrine in the brain. This class is also on of the newer classes of anti-depressants.
Holistic treatments seek to treat the whole person: mind, soul, and body. Holistic treatments include Acupuncture and Acupressure. Chiropractic massage is used to put the body back into proper alignment. Homeopathy uses small doses of natural substances in order to create a condition and to hopefully have the body attack it. This builds up both the immune and body defense system.
Herbal treatments are typically categorized under Holistic treatments. Herbal treatments are used to treat a variety of illnesses and enhance the body's systems. Plants including stems, roots, bark, flowers, and leaves as well as plant substances are used in herbal treatments. They are available in pill, capsule, powder, and extract forms. Each herb has its own potency and the potency will depend on how they were harvested, where they were harvested and how they were prepared.
There is an ongoing trend of people turning more and more toward natural treatments including Holistic medicine. They either don't want to take medications or want to avoid the side effects that accompany many of the pharmaceutical anti-depressant medications. Other people believe in not putting anything that isn't from nature in their bodies.
The question then is: what are the best or are there best treatments for Depression? It is this author's opinion that the best Depression treatments are those that work for you. What works for you may not work in another's case. Sometimes, more than one treatment is used at a time to get the maximum benefit from the primary treatment.
In all cases of Depression, any course of treatment should be approved by your doctor. This is to prevent the possibility of herbal treatments interfering with other prescription
medications you may be taking. It may also happen that you will have to try a couple of different treatments before hitting on the one that works for you.
